Work is currently underway on a rather large project for downtown Singapore by Foster and Partners. The project named Beach Road will occupy an entire city block and is located between the Marina Centre and the Civic District of the city.
The project, which is the work of world renowned company and will create what will be known as an eco-quarter in the city which is in keeping with Singapore's desire to become a 'city in a garden'.
At ground level of there is a huge undulating canopy featuring shapes resembling ribbons. These ribbons rise like domes over the public spaces and dip down close to the edges acting as a buffer between the hot climate and the spaces beneath thus creating a cool, comfortable place for the general public to relax in.
Constructed from white concrete and glazing, the facades are angled giving the towers an interesting rippling effect that's not only aesthetically pleasing but has the practicality of managing solar gain in the towers. At the front the facades glazing extends upwards over the towers slanted peaks.
The shaping and orientations of the tower are designed in such a way as to catch prevailing winds and filter them down to lower floors as an effective cooling system. In keeping with the green theme the towers have extensive communal sky gardens extending over several floors.
The towers will house two top-notch hotels with the usual amenities such as gyms and spas, commercial space, luxury apartments and the all important retail therapy space.
Four buildings that are currently occupying the site will also be retained and opened to for public use and a variety of cafes and restaurants will also feature making the new development a new hotspot to be seen at in the city. Construction of the project is expected to be finished in 2010
