Fosters Northgate Skyscraper
This is the latest image of Norman Foster's newest development in London, a skyscraper directly north of the under construction Broadgate Tower on the edge of the City.
The mixed used project, situated at Northgate, the site of the former Norton Folgate proposal that has now been cancelled, is being developed by Hammerson who have already built the nearby Bishopsgate Square.
Essentially the plans are dominated by a tall building which when viewed in relation to the Broadgate Tower appears to be 180 / 190 metres high. There is also a second shorter tower roughly half the height. In all, the scheme is massive with 90,000 square metres of space including residential accommodation, new offices, shops on the lower floors.
The design of the main building can be compared in terms of massing at least to the Eastgate Tower in Manchester thanks to the distinctive staggered nature it takes on. This staggered nature is the key to the designs released with the buildings massed to gradually step down as they stretch further north in an attempt to relate to the neighbouring three storey buildings that line the northern end of Bishopsgate.
Likewise, the buildings also step down to as they move from east to west allowing them to fit in better with the mid-rise office blocks that litter the area around the Broadgate Centre.
Northgate includes a substantial amount of new public space in the redevelopment plans. There will be a new public plaza on the southern portion of the site that bounds Bishopsgate and a second smaller one to the immediate north of the main tower.
When combined with the Broadgate Tower it will have a massive transformative effect on the northern edge of the City of London where it joins Hackney, which until recently was little more than an ugly duckling when compared to the more bustling areas around Bank and Moorgate.
